Q: I have a Toyota Camry 2000 CE , Stereo volume knob not working?
I have a Toyota Camry 2000 CE, the volume knob of the stereo is Free, i.e. volume is always fixed (on lower side), now how do i know, if the problem is in the Stereo OR the Knob ? Is it possible to take out the Knob and try to increase the volume ???? More information.... The knob is moving freely,, so now how do i take out the Knob, without damaging the stereo???

A: if it freely spins then the knob is broken, but if u feel some resistance then the volume control assembly is shot, need new radio. get a cheapo from crutchfield which u can do yourself and they include the kit.

Q: How do I correct my 2000 Toyota Camry CE P0420 code?
I had the catalytic converter replaced only to have the check engine light come on again the next day. I had both O2 sensors replaced twice!! I was told by the Toyota dealer that I needed to replace both O2 sensors and catalytic converter again with original Toyota manufacturing parts for another $1800!! I told them to shove it and I would continue to drive my car. I have been driving it for a year and a half now. I recently went out and bought an OBD II scan tool to try and fix this problem myself. The O2 sensors are working fine according to the scan tool. However, the check engine light is still on and the freeze frame data is listed below: Calc Load (%) 60.3 Coolant (F) 196 ST FTRM1 (%) 0.7 LT FTRM1 (%) -0.7 MAP (in.hg) 17.7 Engine (RPM) 1703 VEH SPEED (MPH) 33 IAT (F) 61 Recalibrating the ECU seems to make a lot of sense. I am not the original owner of the vehicle as I bought is used in 2006. I don't trust Toyota anymore and the original after market mechanic who replaced my original catalytic converter and O2 sensors. Any idea on what and how I should approach getting the ECU re-calibrated?? Any help is GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! Dwayne M

A: Flashing the computer is needed. There is a computer update program to resolve the "false code P0420". There is a TSB for this. Toyota dealer is the only place you can get the flash installed.

Q: Please help me with my 2000 Toyota Camry CE?
When i start the car (only in the morning, or the 1st start of the day) it makes a sound like the exhaust pipe isn't hooked on tight (up front near the engine)............ plus i had an engine light on, i went to autozone and advanced auto to get the light tested (codes)..... the code/s at auto zone said my O2 sensor/s were goofed..... the codes at advanced auto said my catalytic converter/s were not working at full capacity. ........... since then, i unhooked the battery cable for 6 minutes, put it back on , now the engine light went out so and i can't get the codes to write down..... to make sure Toyota (or any other mechanic won't rip me off). I plan on driving the thing to California from the east coast soon......... what should i do to make sure i'm driving a reliable car across country... Thank You All Very Very Much, Pls. Respond. Peace. Joe - my email is below: the car has 80K miles, I keep it well maintained though. If you have any questions for me, please don't hesitate to email me, Thank You. PS: nice website here my email is: temail2@yahoo.com

A: Joe, you already know part of your problem--the exhaust leak. It gets less after warming up so my feeling is not a cracked manifold. Possible a loose bolt or nut either at the pipe flange or where the manifold bolts to the head. Using a long rubber tube or stethoscope, place one end to your ears and move the other end around the manifold and flange area to trace where the noise is the loudest; that is where it is leaking. It may need a new gasket as the exhaust will burn it and no longer seal. This exhaust leak will fool your oxygen sensor readings-thus auto zone says they are not functioning.(There may be nothing wrong with them because of the leak!) When the O2 sensors do not function correct, they will not feed the catalyst the right oxygen amount; therefore they also may be fine when the leak is fixed! Start with the known problem first. the rest may be secondary.Good Luck SB

Q: Need Help- 2000 Toyota Camry CE?
My parking space puts 1 wheel 8-15 inches above the other. the 1st time i start the car for the day, it makes a noise like the muffler's going to fall off. all starts after that are normal. When my car is parked on a flat (normal) parking spot, it doesn't make any noise when i start it.... the way it should be. I took it to a mechanic, everything checked out fine, although before i took it to him, I didn't know about the tilted verses flat parking thing. His parking was flat, so he didn't hear anything. I've had this parking spot for years, never heard the noise till about a month ago. Anyway, what do u think I should do to get my car normal again...... and pls. don't say "get a flat parking spot" Thank You Very Much. , Joe I guess i could have a mechanic park it tilted overnight, then start it the next day and hear it for himself........ guess i'd have to find a 8-15 inch ramp for one of the front wheels...... anyway, thanks again, Joe . even when i back the car in, the same noise happens. peace

A: i know what is your problem. when you park on the tilted area your engine is tilted and thus your exhaust is also extended. your exhaust is only to extend a certain amount a 8-10 inch ramp is pretty big.

Q: Help with 2000 Toyota Camry?
EGR Insufficient flow and EGR Excessive flow-The vehicle is a 2000 Toyota Camry CE 2.2L. After a diagnostic test, I was told my car had a code of P401 insufficient EGR flow. I replaced the VSV and EGR modulator, which cost me $350.00. I did not replace the EGR valve, the mechanic said it was still good. After rebooting the computer and after 30-40 miles the check engine light is back on and my car is worse than before. It has rough idling and loss or power. I took it back to the mechanic and told him about the problem I was having. He scanned the computer and check the parts he had replaced to make sure they were not defective. The scan came back with a P402 code, EGR Excessive flow. He said he did not know what the problem was and suggested I take it to the Toyota dealership. I did and they were clueless as he was. I also cleaned the throttle bottle with some throttle bottle cleaner, but it did not help. I am at stand still at this point. Any idea what's causing the problem? Can you help me?

A: This is a common trouble code for both camry and solara four cylinder engines. The most common cause for this code is that the EGR modulator valve is defective, it's located on a bracket on the EGR valve and has some vacuum hoses attached to it, try replacing it to solve this problem, it's not expensive, about $65. I pulled this answer directly from the link below. It is a good one with real people you can email directly. check it out.

Q: 2000 Toyota Camry 4 Wheel Alignment-Please Help?
I have a 2000 toyota camry ce, 4 cyl., auto, 85,000 miles......... i'm going to take it to get a 4 wheel alignment, but I am afraid that the people I take it to (wherever it is) might say I need new shocks, new springs, new struts, etc....... when i really may not need any of that - you know -the old rip off stuff. I'm not a mechanic. My question is: Do u know how I can keep myself from being ripped off? Thank You Very Very Much, Joe

A: If your struts/shocks are leaking, then yes, they need to be replaced. but springs don't go bad this early. when the car starts to sag, then you may need springs. but most certainly not now. and if they say you need new shocks. tell them that you want to see them. see if you can see significant leaking from the struts/shocks. if not, don't need to. hope it helps.

Q: Is there a vin code under the hood of Toyota Camry (2000)?
Normally the cars seem to have a vin code in three places: under the windshield, on the driver's door and under the hood on the special plate. The plate usually contains vin and an engine modification, alongside with some other data. I can't find this plate under the hood of Toyota Camry CE SXV20 sedan, manufactured 05/2000, modification SXV20L-CEPDKA. ( photos: http://a332.g.akamai.net/f/332/936/12h/www.edmunds.com//pictures/VEHICLE/2000/Toyota/13766/2000.toyota.camry.10224-E.jpg http://a332.g.akamai.net/f/332/936/12h/www.edmunds.com//pictures/VEHICLE/2000/Toyota/13766/2000.toyota.camry.10470-E.jpg ) Is this normal or is it a sign that the car has been recovered after a crash and repainted? I'd be very grateful if someone could give a link to the scheme/image showing the placement of vin codes for this model. Thank you.

A: On that car, there should be stickers on all the body panels with the vin on them. you should be able to see them just by opening the hood. They don't hide them. Replaced panels do not have vin stickers on them. The third vin that you are looking for is stamped on the frame rail under the car, not on a plate.

Q: How can I better prepare my 2008 Toyota Camry CE 5-Speed MT 5-Speed 2.4L I4 Automatic for a 2000 mile trip?
I'm traveling a 1,000 miles from VA to Florida later this month. Of course, I'm taking I95 to get there, and I know it isn't one of the safest highways to be on, haha. Well I'm going to buy four new tires, that's a right move to do right? Does anyone have any recommendations on where to get my tires put in? Does anyone know the price range it'll be for that as well? I heard Camry tires aren't TOO expensive. Besides that, what could be another good precaution to take when it comes to better suiting my car for this trip? I do know that on a long trip like this it's important to take frequent breaks. Thanks for the help everyone ^_^

A: Ok, everyone keeps saying that since its an 08 you shouldnt need tires. Did you fail to remember that 2008 models were available in the last months of 2007?? Tires lose tread the more you drive, 2008 models arent an exeption to that... MOST IMPORTANT! Get an extra drive belt or 2, and know how to change it out before going on the trip. Get the tranny checked out(check the clutch, fluid etc..) and make sure its good Change the oil, even if its not 3000 miles yet(or whatever your oils good for), just get it changed. Check the air in the tires, and the tread. If theyre bald or will be in the next few hundred miles, you will want to change them. Make sure your spare is in good condition, and properly inflated. Check your battery, make sure its good(autozone or oriellys will check em for you) If you dont have one, get an Air Compressor and air qauge to inflate tires and check the pressure on them periodically for the distance your going id say check em every tank. And make damn sure that you have a jack in the car and a Cell phone with car charger. Also taking a change of wiper blades wouldnt hurt, ive seen em fly off for no reason.

A: Toyota has a very complex EGR control system and even some experts have problems. for example in the last three issues of Motor magazine there was a series of articles devoted to just this issue. also sometimes the code set is only a symptom and not the real problem. EGR flow should not occur until the engine is up to temp. So is your car temp. running normal? You might check with Toyota technical service to see if there is a TSB (technical service bulletin on this)
